Gut-Brain Connection

Dr. Michael D. Gershon, the author of “The Second Brain” and chairman of the department of anatomy and cell biology at Columbia was the first person to coin the phrase about how our gut is our second brain or maybe even our first. Since then, years of studies prove there is a direct link between both gut and brain. As a result, rather than the brain affecting gut functioning, it seems now our gut functions affect our brains. The gut controls moods and can contribute to glowing good health or manifest as issues including obesity, IBS or depression.

The digestive system

Our digestive system is made up of our enteric digestive system (ENS) The ENS is two thin layers of more than 100 million nerve cells lining your gastrointestinal tract from esophagus to rectum. Jay Pasricha, M.D., director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Neurogastroenterology, whose research on it has garnered international attention, says “The enteric nervous system doesn’t seem capable of thought as we know it, but it communicates back and forth with our big brain—with profound results.”

The bacteria- probiotic connection

Living in our digestive system is also our gut microbiome. That is the100 trillion or so bacteria and microorganisms that live in your digestive tract. Harvard medical and health research has found, eating good ‘live’ bacteria strengthens the microbiome. When strengthened, it improves digestion, boosts immunity and promotes a range of health benefits physical and psychological.
